What is this, and why?

What this blog is:

I'm hopeful that this can be a place for me to vent - and maybe if I'm lucky, start some conversations - about a topic that I don't think gets a lot of attention: sexism in "men's interest" magazines and pop culture.

There are a lot of great voices that discuss sexism in pop culture overall: BitchBustMs., of course, and many more.

I'd like to focus, here, on what (some) men consume, or are urged to consume. Maxim, FHM and the like, obviously - and it shouldn't be too hard to find some sexism there. But I have a hunch some of the things that present themselves as more legitimate, special interest magazines (and non-print media as well, it is 2015) like Men's Health, GQ, Men's Journal, have some nougats of male advice that aren't progressive - or juicier still, aren't, but take a tone of egalitarianism.

The most difficult part of all this might be bringing myself to occasionally buy examples - I'd rather do this in a "free" way that doesn't support the very publishers I will be critiquing. But to keep things interesting, I may need to make that sacrifice. Likewise - I'd much rather spend my time reading things that enlightened or entertained me.

But here goes nothing.
